Free gift on offer

On 10th March, Hindus celebrated Maha Shivratri – the night of worship to Shiva. In Hinduism, Shiva is believed to have the power to create and destroy. There is a story that says the energy of his dance created the world, keeps it going and will one day destroy it. Then he will start to dance again and creation will begin once more and this cycle will continue on and on.

On the weekend of 29th to 31st March, followers of Jesus will celebrate Easter. This remembers the time when Jesus died on a cross and then rose again from the dead. It is recorded in the Bible that Jesus told his followers this was going to happen. We also know the reason for it; God had created the world, mankind had gone against Him and a way back to relationship with God was needed.

Jesus is that way back to God and he releases us from the cycle of creation and destruction. Through his one-time sacrifice, we can enter into a relationship with God which we receive as His free gift, available to all. As well as telling his followers he was going to die and come back to life, Jesus also told them why they needed to come through him to gain that elusive relationship with God.

Easter reminds us of the opportunity to receive that free gift. As for me, I think I am going to celebrate!
