East+West helps churches, individuals and organisations to be more effective in reaching their local Asian community in ways that are relevant to their cultures.
Hindus are the third largest faith in the world with increasing influence on every aspect of life. Politicians, film stars, and royalty consult their astrologers or their gurus. People talk about karma. Yet many Christians know very little about their beliefs and way of life. East+West is designed to help both individuals and whole churches understand more about what Hindus and Sikhs believe, build bridges of friendship and respect, and share the good news about Jesus. East+West combines study material with practical activities to have a go at in-between sessions. It focuses on four stages:
Awareness and Attitudes: understanding people and their culture with a focus on the Asian community in Britain; whilst also becoming aware of our own attitudes
Building Bridges: finding common concerns and creative activities to develop relationships
Communicating across Cultures: thinking about culture, learning what others believe and preparing to communicate faith
Disciple-making: looking ahead to the end goal and preparing for changes in your church so that people can grow as disciples of Jesus
Whilst it is possible to undertake East+West on one’s own, it is recommended that the training is run with a facilitator from SAC as four workshops (2 hours each) or as two half days. There is also a review session usually held 1-3 months after East+West has ended.
