South Asian Concern has been working in partnership with churches and individuals mainly in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) since 1991. Our vision is to see wholistic transformation of individuals and communities.
We seek to do this by working with our partners to share the good news of Jesus and strengthen churches to bring hope and spiritual change; equip people to care for their health, educational and economic needs; teach the Bible, train church leaders and support senior leaders.
We have links with partners across South Asia, but focus mainly on the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (UP).
Uttar Pradesh: a country within a country
Uttar Pradesh (UP) is India’s largest state. It has a population of 200 million people. If UP was a separate nation it would be the sixth most populated in the world. It is the heartland of Hinduism, as well as the birthplace of Buddhism. Muslims have a strong presence. Around 0.17% of UP’s population are followers of Jesus.
UP is one of the most socially deprived regions of India. It has once of the highest maternal mortality and infant mortality rates in India. Only 40% of males and 25% of females are functionally literate. Despite the widespread poverty, it is politically powerful – five of India’s Prime Ministers have come from UP.
How do you serve 200 million people?
The process began long ago with the faithful prayers and service of those who were sowing the seeds in the region. SAC is currently focused on three areas – wholistic transformation, support and training. We work closely with three of our partners for whom we act in an advisory and oversight role: Kachhwa Transformational Ministries, the School of Biblical Teaching and Paul and Su East. We also partner with other organisations who we serve through prayer and by forwarding monetary donations to them.
